中元节是老北京的重要节令。习俗上首先是祭祀、祭扫祖先，“中元祭扫优胜清明”；其次是盂兰盆会，“庵观寺院，设盂兰会”；再者是放河灯、烧法船的活动。其中，北海公园的盂兰盆法会最为盛大。这一习俗在日本侵占华北之后，依旧保持了下来。
